The BMW ALPINA D3 Bi-Turbo sets whole new standards of performance and efficiency in the segment of sporty and luxurious vehicles powered by diesel. The 3-litre straight-six engine with Bi-Turbo charging produces 257 kW (350 hp) and 700 Nm torque and delivers impressive performance in the compact, agile body of the multi-award winning BMW 3 Series.
With the introduction of the 2016 Model Year the BMW ALPINA D3 Bi-Turbo participates in the BMW model update and also sees a number of ALPINA specific changes in design and equipment.
The front features a new spoiler and a chrome BMW kidney grill, both accentuate the dynamic appearance and exclusive design. The new LED headlights are extremely efficient and provide even better illumination of the road, their design underlines the sporty, aggressive stance of the D3 Bi-Turbo. The two twin tailpipes are elegantly integrated into the re-designed rear apron, above which the new LED rear lights are clearly visible.
High quality materials, new surface elements and subtle design changes dominate the interior. The standard equipment now features Cruise Control, Park Distance Control and Storage Package for added security and comfort.
The D3 Bi-Turbo Saloon accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 276 km/h. This makes the a combined fuel consumption of only 5.3 l/100 km and 139 g/km CO2 based on the ECE norm all the more astonishing. With this automobile, ALPINA again redefines the benchmark for performance, combining extraordinary power output and excellent efficiency with familiar ALPINA virtues appreciated by our customers worldwide, and presents a car that currently knows no equal.
The 3-litre six cylinder Bi-Turbo diesel engine sets standards in terms of power, torque and efficiency. The outstanding base engine from BMW is constructed entirely from light-weight aluminium and features latest-generation common rail direct fuel injection as well as a two-stage turbocharging with variable turbine geometry. Effective optimisation of pressure losses and special intake air ducts exploit the full engine potential and lead to significant gains in power output and enhanced engine characteristics. By also utilising the achievable boost and injection pressure a maximum power output of 257 kW (350 hp) at 4000 rpm and an impressive 700 Nm of torque between 1500 and 3000 rpm is achieved. The throughput of the cooling system has a major influence on the performance of turbocharged engines. Full power delivery even under the highest thermodynamic loads is ensured by the high-performance cooling package, which comprises a large-volume intercooler with optimised intake and outlet ports as well as two radiators located in front of the wheel arches for optimum effectiveness. Despite its impressive performance characteristics and high specific power output, this drivetrain is also extremely economical. Long cruising ranges are achieved effortlessly thanks to a combined fuel consumption measured according to ECE norm of only 5.3 to 6.6 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 139 to 174 g/km, depending on the model.
D3 Bi-Turbo Touring with all-wheel drive
The all-wheel drive system uses the technical possibilities of the BMW xDrive system, whose intelligent and dynamic control system distributes output smoothly and fully variably between the front and rear axles in milliseconds, thereby ensuring maximum traction and superior performance in all driving situations. The torque distribution control system, which is interconnected with the engine management and chassis control systems, is performance-oriented. It significantly increases driving dynamics and agility, particularly during high lateral acceleration and guarantees sporty and neutral handling. Besides ensuring optimal traction during acceleration by preventing slip-related losses, the system also permanently monitors the driving conditions and actively distributes torque to always ensure a high degree of propulsion and safety at all times, e.g. on snow or road surfaces with abrupt changes in the friction coefficients.
The 8-speed sport automatic transmission has been explicitly adapted in cooperation with ZF for the requirements of BMW ALPINA automobiles and offers exemplary shift comfort with a pronounced sporty characteristic.
The adapted mechatronics and a special torque converter ensure that the high power output is transmitted with maximum efficiency and comfort to the driven wheels.
ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC is not just the description for the traditional shift buttons on the back of the steering wheel, but also means that the transmission software is explicitly tailored for every drivetrain type.
The 8-speed sport automatic transmission combined with ALPINA typical high torque output at low engine speeds allows effortless, relaxed and economical driving in high gears and outstanding cruising comfort on long journeys. Simultaneously the hardware design of the transmission does not require any significant reduction in torque when changing gear and allows for impressively dynamic and very fast gear changes under full load. As such the transmission plays a crucial role in facilitating very quick acceleration during dynamic driving but also plays an important part in reducing fuel consumption thanks to BMW Efficient Dynamics Technologies such as the ECO PRO mode as well as the Auto Start Stop function.
Chassis & Suspension
The ALPINA driving experience is unique - perhaps best characterised by effortlessness and powerful confidence. The intelligent suspension and chassis set-up plays a pivotal role in this by allowing high, perceptible comfort combined with outstanding driving dynamics and neutral handling. This is the oft-cited driving comfort ‘made by‘ ALPINA.
The adaptive ALPINA sports suspension combines electronically adjustable dampers with springs, auxiliary springs and anti-roll bars. Independent of the active dampers continuously adapting to the current driving conditions, the driver can also noticeably adjust the suspension and overall driving dynamics towards a more comfort or sport orientated setup.
Camber and toe-in settings adapted to the model-specific wheel and tyre combination, subtle elastokinematic measures and the maximum rim size ensure high directional stability, precise steering and agile handling. Every BMW ALPINA is supplied from the factory exclusively equipped with MICHELIN Super Sport summer tyres. These high-performance tyres, which are specifically matched to the respective car, are benchmark in the categories: traction, wet and dry grip and durability. The tyres on all BMW ALPINA automobiles forego run-flat technology in favour of enhanced ride comfort.
The Dynamic Performance Control button, which is used to select the different modes of the electronically adjustable dampers, also controls other parameters and features that influence driving dynamics. Depending on the equipment specifications of the particular model, this may include for example active roll stabilisation, power steering, torque distribution (all-wheel drive only) and even the driving stability control systems – the latter which are programmed with a noticeably sport-oriented setup.
The mechanical limited-slip differential improves traction when driving very dynamically and inhibits wheel spin by distributing torque to the wheel with more grip. This situation may arise for example when a wheel becomes unloaded during cornering or during acceleration when the driven wheels are on surfaces with high differences in grip. When negotiating tight corners in a spirited fashion, for example in the mountains or on a circuit, but also in generally wet conditions, undesired wheel spin can occur on the inside rear wheel due to becoming unloaded in combination with high engine torque. The limited-slip differential intervenes at an early stage to prevent wheel spin from arising and therefore ensures that there is no loss in traction so that the vehicle can accelerate optimally out of the corner. Overall, the limited-slip differential leads to a significant and perceptible increase in driving dynamics, much to the delight of particularly sporty drivers. The hardware itself consists of a torque-sensing differential of motor sports quality developed in cooperation with the company Drexler. It is assembled by hand with precision-forged gear wheels and a CNC-milled housing.
The design of an automobile from ALPINA skilfully combines the BMW design language with distinct and yet evolutionary ALPINA elements. In total the appearance of a BMW ALPINA is a reflection of its inner values: powerful, dynamic, confident but never intrusive.
The traditional colours of Blue and Green are irreversibly associated with our company. These colours also form the basis of the two exclusive ALPINA paint finishes ALPINA Blue Metallic and ALPINA Green Metallic. A large number of BMW and BMW Individual paint finishes as well as custom paintwork are also available.
A clear design language that combines technology and stylish features characterises all BMW ALPINA automobiles and allows connoisseurs to easily recognise their heritage. Although components which influence aerodynamics may also have an aesthetic function, their construction and form follows strictly aerodynamic principles. The design of the front spoiler with discreet ALPINA logo ensures effective air flow to the extensive high-performance cooling system demanded by powerful turbocharged engines. In combination with the rear spoiler, depending on model, this results in excellent and very balanced aerodynamic properties and a maximum reduction of lift, which is of central importance for stable and safe handling - particularly at higher speeds. The rear apron is designed to elegantly surround the two double-ended tailpipes of the exhaust system.
The CLASSIC Wheel
The ALPINA CLASSIC wheel is a design icon and is probably the most unique and well-known visual distinguishing feature of every BMW ALPINA automobile. Defined by classic beauty, continuity and elegance, it has its origins more than 40 years ago. Back then the design featuring twenty spokes was the best engineering solution for achieving maximum strength while minimising weight. A entirely unique feature of the current generation is the removable and lockable wheel hub cover, behind which the concealed inner valve is located. Compressed air is pumped into the tyres through a hollow drilled spoke. The ALPINA CLASSIC wheel, in the sizes 19” to 21” depending on model, is a defining attribute of any BMW ALPINA and makes a decisive contribution to its elegant and exclusive appearance.
The world famous decorative stripes, officially known as the ALPINA Deco-Set, are more than a homage to the 70s and 80s, they are an indispensable part of the ALPINA heritage. The Deco-Set set has a pinstripe-like and very fine horizontal design and can be optionally applied to the vehicle front and sides in either Silver or Gold.
BMW ALPINA interiors are characterised by an elegant and exclusive ambience with typical ALPINA attributes, offering high comfort and practical features as well as extensive standard equipment.
There are almost no limits to the design and configuration possibilities of the interior. Alongside a large selection of colours and materials from BMW and BMW Individual, the ALPINA manufactory offers a wide range of personalisation options.
Small and stylish details round off the identity of every interior. This includes the door sills, metal emblems in the seat backrests and in the floor mats, and of course the exclusive production plaque with model-specific build number. In combination with a BMW upholstery there are a host of additional design possibilities and individualisation options, for example classic ALPINA diagonal rhomb applications in the seat backrests, embossings and other decorative elements.
The hand-finished ALPINA sports steering wheel is covered with the finest LAVALINA leather and features parallel stitching in traditional in Blue and Green. The ergonomic SWITCH-TRONIC shift buttons are integrated neatly into the rear side of the steering wheel. The steering wheel is easily individualised to your personal taste - the stitching can be matched to the upholstery, the rim thickened or the material changed to Alcantara.
In addition to the exclusive ALPINA interior trim made of classic fine wood or modern piano lacquer and featuring a discreet logo, it is also possible to choose from a wide range of BMW alternatives. A particularly luxurious option is to cover the interior trim in finest LAVALINA or sporty carbon leather.
The face of the ALPINA instrument cluster is characterised by a design whose essential features have a long tradition going back over twenty years: red needles provide a perfect contrast to the subtle blue background of the round instrument faces. The numbers on the speedometer, which go beyond the 300 km/h mark, can be easily read at any time and are supported by an additional digital speed display.
