More advanced safety technology, more powertrain choices and a new more refined interior: Two award-winning models just got better with the 2015 Mazda6 and 2015 Mazda CX-5, which make their European motor show debuts in March in Geneva.
They are the first Mazdas with the company’s new Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH), an autonomous high-beam system with four independently controllable blocks of LEDs per headlamp. T o avoid impairing other motorists’ vision, it shuts off only the high-beam block shining in the specific direction of an oncoming or preceding vehicle, leaving the remaining LEDs on for better night-time visibility. ALH, which also features widened low beam coverage and automatic levelling, includes the functionality of High Beam Control (HBC) and the Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), two systems currently available from Mazda.
The 2015 Mazda6 and 2015 Mazda CX-5 are also equipped with several other new safety systems. Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) extends the existing Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM) system’s range while also adding Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), which warns the driver of approaching vehicles when reversing. Lane-keep Assist System (LAS) provides steering torque assistance (among other things) to help prevent unintentional lane changes, thus complementing the Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS). A first for Mazda, Driver Attention Alerts (DAA) monitors the driver’s condition and recommends a break if it detects a change in behaviour. Smart City Brake Support Forward/Reverse (SCBS F/R), meanwhile, adds reverse gear functionality to the current SCBS system, which automatically applies the brakes if there is an increased collision risk. The CX-5 also gets Smart Brake Support (SBS) and Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC), both of which debuted in Europe on the Mazda6.
As for powertrains, the 2015 Mazda6 wagon with SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel is available with Mazda’s new-generation all-wheel drive (AWD) system. Already used on the CX-5, it features the world’s first front wheel slip warning detection system and now employs a specially developed low -viscosity oil to further improve fuel economy. The 2015 CX-5, in turn, is now offered in Europe with the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 petrol engine in conjunction with i- ELOOP, Mazda’s brake energy regeneration system, and Drive Selection, which enables a choice of drive modes for added responsiveness on demand.
Inside, the remarkably ergonomic heads-up cabin introduced on the new Mazda3 has arrived on these two models, including the new-generation human-machine interface (HMI).
Both get the MZD Connect in-car smartphone connectivity system as well as a 7-inch touchscreen display and added infotainment features, while the 2015 Mazda6 also comes with a head-up display. Nicely suited to the overall cabin material quality and coordination, a switch-activated electric parking brake – Mazda’s first – replaces the handbrake lever on the 2015 CX-5 and 2015 Mazda6 for a cleaner centre console. Finally, suspension upgrades and advanced sound insulation improve ride comfort while significantly reducing cabin noise.
